A Slow, Boring Start. Sorry.
I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about this film online. So when I got the chance, I immediately grabbed a copy of this film to watch it. I must admit. The first part of the film is kinda boring. The pacing is so slow that there were times that I was thinking if I’m watching the right film. But I guess this pays off in the end because we get to have this fleshed out characters and starts to see them as real persons.
I think this is how the filmmakers create a three dimensional character. Though slow pace and build-up. I might work at times, like Insidious (2011). But sometimes it doesn’t, just like in Deliver Us From Evil (2014). This time, it works for the film. Although it was really a tedious task to go through the first half of the film. But when the strange events in the police station starts happeneing, thingmore interesting as every minute passed by.
Just like what we have discussed earlier, the films takes a lot of time in building up it’s characters. This made them more fleshed out. And soon, as we get to know more about these people, we start to unravel their true colors. Almost all of the characters in this story has either took someone’s life by accident or killed that person intentionally. One of the most disturbing of them all was Sgt. McReady (played by the amazing Douglas Russell) He is one of the most terrifying presence I’ve seen in films for along time. I’ve got nothing but praises for him in this film.
Another one that made the film so exciting to watch was PC Rachel Heggie (played by Pollyanna McIntosh). She’s the final girl that this film deserves. She shares some similarities with Sharni Vinson’s Erin in You’re Next. She evolves from the timid police officer to a blood drenched survivor in the end.
A Slasher Hiding In Sheep’s Clothing
All throughout the film, there is this slasher vibe that I’ve been sensing. But the film doesn’t appear to be one, especially with it’s long introduction of the characters to give them a better background. But as soon as the first person dies inside the police station, that vibe take over the whole scene and it turns into a slasher flick. But this is no cheap slasher, Im telling you. This is one of the best. For me, it shares the throne with other films in the genre like You’re Next, The Guest , The Town That Dreaded Sundown and other great slasher films of this generation.
The kills in this film is top notch. It features a lot of blood spurting out, necks being shot, faces being crushed to death, and other unimaginable ways to kill a person. One of my personal favorites was the death of Hanna Stanbridge as PC Jennifer Mundie. Her death was just so fun to watch yet so gross that I had to think twice if I’m gonna close my eyes or I’ll keep on watching. Just so amazing.
Verdict:
This is one of my favorite films so far this year. And I’m sure that this is gonna be in my list of the best ones this 2015.
With it’s simple yet twisted story, great characters, top notch kills, and endless dosage of blood and gore, this film is sure to satisfy the cravings of other genre fans. Definitely worth a look!
I’m rating this 5 out of 5 stars.
