This one's quite a weird entry because it was actually a Live Facebook broadcast that was streamed on October 28, 2016. The lead protagonist plays a version of her psuedo-self, Brialynn (from one of her real personal facebook accounts), and begins her Facebook live stream stating that she will not be doing her usual make up tutorial today. As viewers enter the broadcast, it becomes evident that Brialynn may have been involved in the alleged suicide of a local girl named Sarah Barker.
A website from "Hunter Johnson" (www.ripsarahbarker.webstarts.com), sensationalizes this as its objective points towards Brialynn as the culprit. A defensive and almost unhinged Bria, does what any innocent accused would do, she attempts to communicate with Sarah’s spirit. She provides an ambiguous apology, leaving the viewers to wonder if she did it. Any fan of the genre, knows where this is going… the live feed becomes a documented file of paranormal events and “visitors” caught on “tape”.
#RIPSarahBarker was conceived by director: Brialynn Massie (RVTH Genesis, Serena Waits) and produced by Charles Chudabala (2 Jennifer, Serena Waits). Brialynn originally created the short script as a stand alone attempt to film a live horror short to be streamed on Facebook. Enlisting the help of producer Charles Chudabala and Hunter Johnson who served as Associate Producer and creative consultant, Brialynn Massie would direct #RIPSarahBarker, a unique horror story, streamed live, in a one-shotter, where the viewers have a real opportunity to influence the storyline and dialogue. It was then posted online as a short where I was able to watch it (since I wasn't online by the time it went live). Brialynn and Charles Chudabala hope to create a universe around Sarah Barker, which may lead to more live broadcasts, storylines, and other characters.
✰✰✰1/2 out of 5 stars. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from the short. It starts like a normal Facebook Live video with the main character talking about herself and interacting with the people who places comments on the Live broadcast. It was actually fun listening to the main character telling various stories to defend herself from a rumor that connects her to the death of her friend Sarah. I knew from the very start that she's an unreliable narrator, so when things start flying around her room during the video, I wasn't really surprised. But what I enjoyed about this short is it's unique exposition of it's story. I've seen another one like this before when MTV broadcasted a livestream of SCREAM Live! on Youtube as part of it's promotion for the second season of Scream : The TV Series and it was sort of fun watching all these characters run around the studio while on broadcast. This short, while it was limited on the setting, also has the same fun vibe. It's campy, funny, and unique. It's not something of a breakthrough, but when you enjoy watching a film, however silly it is, that's all that matters.
